South Area
Our aim is to improve the well being of all older people
across the locality through a variety of initiatives:
Ageing Well – Promoting Healthy Lifestyles
for the over 50’s in Sedgefield Borough.
Are you looking to improve your wellbeing through exercise?
Why not join one of the many gentle physical exercise activities
we offer across the Borough?
In addition to our weekly activities, we also hold a number
of special health promotion events and taster sessions throughout
the year. We also offer Lifelong Learning opportunities through
a range of short courses held in the community.
New activities will be set up in the Durham Dales in early
summer 2008. Please contact the South Area office for more
details of these developments or if you think Age Concern
could develop an activity in your area. Our Advice and Information
worker is happy to visit community and voluntary groups on
request giving a talk on what is available.
Mobile Information Service visiting 23 village
sites in rural Teesdale and Weardale, offering benefits checks,
help with form filling, and carrying a wide range of information
especially for older people.
Representing the Older Person
Age Concern aims to represent the views of the older person
or their carers by attending local forums to represent older
people at a strategic level. Also, there is an active Older
Peoples Network in Wear Valley and Sedgefield Borough that
bring people together. These are friendly, informal meetings
and new members are warmly welcomed. If being part of a group
does not interest you, then you can be involved via the telephone,
returning questionnaires or meeting one to one. Being involved
includes invitations to countywide conferences and events
looking at services that support older people or their carers.
The only cost incurred in time and an interest in services
for older people.
Age Concern Handyvan Service
Our service covers Sedgefield Borough, Wear Valley and Teesdale
providing free home risk assessments and carrying out small
DIY job or repairs to help prevent accidents and falls in
the home. This service is free but a donation towards the
materials used helps support the service.
Volunteers
Our volunteers are invaluable and without them we could not
deliver such a wide range of initiatives. Volunteers are recruited,
trained and supported to assist Age Concern in enhancing the
lives of local older people.
