Healthy Horizons

This collaborative project is delivered by Age Concern Durham County in partnership with Durham City Council, Chester-le-street District Council, County Durham Primary Care Trust and Sport England.

The aim is to increase participation in physical activity of people aged 50+, especially the elderly, who are more restricted in their ability to access the ‘traditional’ service provision eg. leisure centres.

The project has introduced innovative solutions to engage older people in physical activity by reducing barriers. Focus groups, taster sessions and classes have been held in a variety of venues including community centres, church halls, sheltered accommodation, day centres and residential homes in and around areas of Durham and Chester-le-street.

Activities currently running include seated exercise, gentle circuit classes, tai chi, yoga, aqua aerobics, lead walks, and relaxation sessions. For details of the activities available in your are go to our events page.
